  3. C64TCP Review

  5. Well my unit finally arrived, and to
  6. be honest I didnt have to wait very
  7. long from placing the order till the
  8. unit popped through my letterbox. In
  9. fact the total time was just a few
  10. days after payment notification. I was
  11. even offered a refund as Ahmet Zeki
  12. Eymou  didnt know if he would be able
  13. to continue production of the Hardware
  14. and software or even have the time to
  15. provide full support.
  16.  
  17. Size matters
  18. The unit is quite small, around the
  19. size of a small deck of playing cards
  20. or if you are a smoker a standard pack
  21. of 20 cigarettes. The unit needs a 9
  22. volt power supply or adaptor (this has
  23. to be purchased separately and will be
  24. needed to sourced from you country)
  25. the adaptor I purchased is a multi
  26. adaptor from a well known UK
  27. electrical supplier,  Later I found a
  28. small adaptor with the correct
  29. connector and power output to run the
  30. device.

  32. Its important to set the correct
  33. polarity and my adaptor being multi
  34. purpose permits the user not only to
  35. set the voltage but also the polarity
  36. of the connections with the pin in the
  37. middle being + and the outer edge
  38. being
  39.  
  40. INSTALLATION
  41. Installation is easy double click on
  42. the set-up and click next
  43.  
  44. the install will walk you through the
  45. whole process with ease once installed
  46. click close I noticed no icon was
  47. installed for C64TCP and I had to
  48. create my own shortcut, remember where
  49. the files were installed!

  51. C:\Program Files\C64TPC\bin

  53. By default you need to drag the icon
  54. c64tcp.exe to your desktop, I also
  55. noticed I didnt have full access to
  56. the bin folder where all the d64
  57. images were installed I only had read,
  58. If you log on as an administrator you
  59. do have full access so you will need
  60. to set this manually if you use a
  61. lesser account for normal everyday use
  62. (you should do as good practice) In
  63. the start menu is a CTK+ folder item
  64. clicking in there revealed an
  65. application to change the look and
  66. feel; you can play with this yourself
  67. as it alters the style of the program
  68. but doesnt seem to allow anything other
  69. than setting defaults ok main program

  72. USAGE
  73. Connect the serial cable to the pc and
  74. the device to the c64 and power on you
  75. should see the device has 2 amber
  76. lights showing no connection
  77. We need to load a disk image into our
  78. virtual disk
  79.  
  80. click on the serial icon it should
  81. read connect to selected device ensure
  82. your coms port is selected default is
  83. com 1 on the pc this should be
  84. labelled up com1 or com2 most modern
  85. pcs will just have a com1 or only usb
  86. so you need a usb to seral port
  87. adaptor although I dont think this has
  88. been tested!

  90. On the Name select a d64 you want to
  91. load Then click on the connection
  92. button

  94. you notice the green light goes on and
  95. the device plugged into the c64
  96. changes the amber lights go out and
  97. the green light comes on the device is
  98. ready and connected. you also see that
  99. the preview displays what is in the
  100. d64 file on the pc preview window
  101. now mount the disk by clicking on the
  102. disk button

  104. notice the display has changed again
  105. the target now shows the d64 image
  106. file name

  108. ok we are ready for the c64 side lets
  109. look at a directory
  110. on the c64 type load $,8 then press
  111. return
  112. wow whats happened the c64 output is
  113. wrong this realy threw me for a while
  114. lets see if I can help aout here a

  124. Ok its not what I am used to seeing on
  125. the commodore 64 its also nothing like
  126. the preview but the BLOK is obviously
  127. the block size  DOSYA ADI must be
  128. program description TIP must be the
  129. file type BLOK BROS Must be bytes free
  130. in the d64 image

  133. You know if you dont mount the disk as
  134. you get something like

  138. When you display the directory (no
  139. idea what is means probably no disk
  140. image has been mounted)

  142. So to the load the first file in this
  143. example I need to type Load I PLAY 3D
  144. S./(C),8 and press return
  145.  
  146. notice the virtual driver has changed
  147. and shows a green on and a red loading
  148. light, the c64 hardware shows 1 amber
  149. light and this denotes the c64 is
  150. loading from disk this took around 2
  151. mins to load notice on the pc you see
  152. a real-time progress bar
  153. the C64 comes back with a READY prompt
  154. you can now run the application and it
  155. plays perfectly!
  156. The device doesnt support turbo loads
  157. so you need to ensure you dont have
  158. disk images with turbo load enabled
  159. also it doesnt seem to be fully IDE 64
  160. compatible if you load a disk with the
  161. ide plugged in on device 8 it will
  162. fail after a few seconds I have loaded
  163. disks in other virtual drives 9/10/11
  164. fine but 8 fails so you have been
  165. warded.

  167. Its a very neat piece of hardware
  168. about the size of a box of playing
  169. cards or cigarettes and can be
  170. supplied with serial port lead for pc
  171. so I can complain about the price
  172. Clicking on the file menu
  173.  
  174. permits the creation of d64 images I
  175. have created some BASIC applications
  176. and they save and loaded fine so
  177. presume other applications will
  178. behaved as well because they load
  179. fine, on the device is a reset switch
  180. should the application hang on the pc
  181. or some other misfortune become on the
  182. user flicking the switch will reset
  183. the c64 end and even keep the disk
  184. image loaded and mounted on the pc
  185. side

  187. Metal warrior is a multi load game and
  188. that functioned without problems
  189. obviously I dont have time to test
  190. every application.
  191. This is quite a nice touch
  192.  
  193. notice how you can drill down the
  194. folders on your machine and the bar
  195. changes at the top displaying them
  196. here I am in the folder

  201. I can easily move back one folder to
  202. C:\Documents and
  203. Settings\Dell\Desktop\ultima gold

  205. By just clicking install or even back

  207. C:\Documents and Settings\Dell\Desktop
  208. By clicking desktop button I liked
  209. this feature, although this disk image
  210. didnt load because it uses a turbo
  211. load

  213. UPGRADES
  214. Obviously I would hope the application
  215. is further supported and turbo load
  216. would be supported if there is any
  217. further development but as a version 1
  218. this is really promising if you have a
  219. pc and want a really big disk drive to
  220. play games then I would suggest his
  221. device even without the support.

  223. Further only d64 files are supported
  224. and it would be nice to have other
  225. formats even d81 support added
